Three People on Motobike

Only in Chiangmai

Welcome to Chiang Mai, small city with many interesting cultures and diversity of people, modern and old society, climate etc., all these things make this city very charm itself.

"This is the traditional mode of transport for many families in Chiang Mai.  Many people here have no option but to travel by this means as it is the most economical means as well as most convenient way of getting around.

Sometimes up to four or even five people squeeze onto a motorcycle powered by a 50 cc to 100 cc engine.  Compared to countries where 3.0 to 4.0 Litre engines are common, Thai people are doing their part in reducing greenhouse gases and reducing fossil oil dependency simply by choosing this mode of transport, albeit out of economic necessity.

Some of these work-horses are piled high with goods making their way to the market.

Legal or not, Thai police are not fastidious in imposing the law regarding maximum passenger capacity or maximum loads.  They understand the economic pressures of their fellow countrymen well.  Many a policeman have even been spotted riding motorcycles with their wife and children aboard.

In Chiang Mai, safety helmets are mandatory but children seem to be exempted.  Riders generally leave their helmets on their side mirrors unattended wherever they park their motorcycles.  This speaks volumes for the character of the people unlike in some countries where even side mirrors disappear within a few minutes of parking a motorcycle (let alone the helmet).

Here's a tip...  in each country that you visit, look at the motorcycles.  If they don't have side mirrors, just ask yourself the question why?  Is it because the people there cannot afford the side mirrors for their own safety or is it because their driving skills are so bad that they do not care about their own safety (even though the motorcycle is an extremely vulnerable mode of transport) or is it simply because they are getting pinched (stolen)?

Pity them if they cannot afford to puchase something for their own safety.  Be careful on the roads if they couldn't care less about their own safety.  They are not likely to care about others' safety as well.  Most of all be careful of your property if even side mirrors are valuable enough to be stolen.

Old Vespas and Scooters are still very popular in Chiangmai as can be seen from the shiny, blue motorcycle in the rear.  Ladies like them because it suits their skirts.  They find it difficult to mount a normal motorcycle while wearing skirts.

So usually when they are riding pillion (at the back) of any motorcycle, they do not straddle the seat.  Instead, they just sit sideways.  After years of practise, they can balance like acrobats even though the driver wizzes around, in and out of traffic and round corners all at high speeds!"

Chiangmai also main city in Northern part of Thailand so many bus companies to serve, you can go around the region from here or sometime you need to go down to Bangkok first before you catch other bus.  One Bus Company that very unique they will have their own bus stop but same area as bus station and they have bag rail same as the airport but smaller but do not have to scan for weapon!
