Spas in other areas of Thailand may use different methods based on the environment and the culture of the local people.  The spas in the North are the most famous because of their unique style.  Anyone who has been to Chiang Mai would probably acknowledge its unique culture, architectural design, and the beauty of the native people. Moreover, the average temperature of this region is lower than any other in Thailand. Because of this, it has inherited the ingredients that create the unique style of The Thai Lanna Spa.  These spas are focused on the senses of sight, taste, smell, sound, and touch which lead to relaxation.  The traits listed above are the essential formula which yields the uniqueness of the Thai Lanna Spa.

In present day Chiang Mai, there are many spas operating successfully. A community of spas has been formed for gathering news and techniques in order to keep Thai Lanna standards up to date. The Thai Lanna Spa Association has 48 spas throughout Chiang Mai, Chaing Rai, Mae Hong Son, Phitsanulok, Lamphun, Lampang, and Nan.

Massage in Chiang Mai

The ancient practice of relaxing massage has been passed on from generation to generation in the farming families of Lanna. In the 1830s King Rama III set up a massage and herbal medicine school at Wat Pho in Bangkok.  Today it is still the premiere school for training and most of the best northern masseuses have graduated from there.

The various types of traditional Thai massage may be categorized as follows:

   1) For general relaxation, the relief of fatigue and nervous tension, to stimulate the blood and improve physical fitness.

 2) To cure simple ailments such as muscle pain, stiffness, cramps, lower back pain and to help the elderly or paralysed who are unable to exercise.
   3) Foot massage which has been adapted from Chinese foot reflexology and which helps to stimulate and improues activities of the internal organs.
   4) Even though the science of oil massage originated in the west, the people of Lanna have used fragrance and herbs to enhance the health giving benefits of massage since ancient times.
   5) Some masseuses are specially trained to massage young babies, giving a warm and loving touch.

The ancient herbal healing traditions have deep roots in Thai culture.  The herbal heat compress, Thai herbal steam and Thai massage are derived from folk medicine and ancient midwifery techniques.

Today, natural products and aromatherapy are respected and widely practiced as one of the most popular complementary medicinal therapies.  In common with many other complementary therapies, aromatherapy takes a holistic approach to healing by considering the whole person and treating both the physical and emotional symptoms.

It uses natural products and therefore avoids the problems associated with synthetic drugs such as their side effects and toxicity. Here is a good opportunity for Chiang Mai to promote the significant benefits of using herbal products as an alternative medicine within the world market.  Thai herbs can be added to food and drinks.  The use of pure essential oils from medicinal plants and flowers for massage, inhalation and steam baths offers a natural approach to enhancing health and well being.

The refreshing elements which come from herbal fragrances effectively lifts our emotional state.  For example: sweet basil may be used to refresh, lemon oil may be used to ease indigestion and refresh.  The smell of jasmine flower contains ingredients that calm the central nervous system and instantly improve spirits.  The refreshing herbal drinks are full of quality remedies for various illnesses.

In Chiangmai traditional healing usually combines massage, herbal medicine and herbal steam baths for treating just about any ailment known, as well as for simply felling good.
